Hey Now.

They play a drop in from "The Sopranos" on the radio every now and then. It's one of the scenes where the old men are hanging around bullshitting. And the one guy says, "you remember Fat Tony (*)? They say he invented point shaving. Back in the 50's." And then the other guy says "Yeah, UCLA versus Oregon State, 1958. Nobody beat the spread. It was groundbreaking."

(*) I've reconstructed from a flawed memory much of this. But the point was, two old guys talking about some other old guy who invented point shaving. It's funny.

Don't I remember some controversy a few years back where people guessed that the NBA officials were making suspect calls to make the playoffs more exciting?

There were also a series of studies that attempted to prove that NBA referees are racist. If I remember correctly, most people disregarded it as flawed research.

But here's a paper on point shaving.
