This seems like, as you say, a lot of "jounalistic garment rendering" when its probably just an excuse to get rid of people.
I am not a journalist, but it seems like there is a lot of tension between "do nothing improper" and "do whatever you can for the source to gain their trust and the story".
I agree. I call it the Chamraz paradox- people drawn to journalism are inherently the wrong sort people to be making ethical/moral judgment calls that good reportage requires.
